Fed: Government moves to prop up Mitsubishi

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD denies an $85 million aid package for Mitsubishi's Australianoperation is a bailout -- saying a healthy car industry is in the national interest.

Mr HOWARD says Australia needs to decide whether it wants some of the global auto manufacturingaction, or whether the Adelaide operation should just be allowed to fold.

The federal government will provide $35 million while the South Australian governmenthas offered $40 million cash, plus another $10 million in support over 10 years.

The company has accepted the offer and confirmed plans to invest almost $1 billionin its Adelaide operations to produce two new cars and create about 1,200 new jobs.

Mitsubishi says the investment will guarantee the future of the Adelaide factoriesfor the next 10 years.
