SUGAR EXPORTERS EYE RUSSIA, TAIWAN. Sugar exporter Guatemala hopes to make significant inroads into Russia and Taiwan by negotiating tariff-free sugar imports this year, industry officials said, reports Reuters (Aug. 15, 2005). The Guatemalan Sugar Association, Asazgua, forecast exports to Taiwan to jump by up to 49% next year after Taipei agreed to scrap import tariffs on a 70,000 ton quota of Guatemalan sugar under a free trade deal signed in July. Guatemala, classified 6th biggest sugar exporter in 2004 by the International Sugar Organization, hopes to sign a similar deal with Russia in October, Asazgua President Armando Boesche said in an interview while on a visit to Taipei.
