Vic: End to Pt Nepean sale plans fails to quell battle over site

The political battle over Point Nepean on Victoria's Mornington peninsula has intensified, despite a federal government decision not to sell any of the former defence site.

Parliamentary Secretary for Defence FRAN BAILEY says the government will retain itsremaining 90 hectares at Point Nepean, and lease it out for educational, community ortourism purposes.

Ms BAILEY says the government's decision to abandon the sale process means the landand heritage buildings will be preserved and public access will be guaranteed.

But Victorian Environment Minister JOHN THWAITES says leasing the site for 40 or 50years instead of selling it won't give it any protection.

Mr THWAITES says many forms of development will be possible, because leasing the landwill mean it won't be subject to state planning laws.

He says if the Commonwealth wants to preserve the site, it should make it a national park.
