Rex Chapman - a former University of Kentucky basketball star who now plays for the NBA's Phoenix Suns - taped a radio ad backing Kentucky LG Steve Henry in the recent Democratic Senate primary. And the ad literally and figuratively blew the whistle on Henry's leading opponents, Democratic Cong. and nominee Scotty Baesler and millionaire businessman Charlie Owen.
With a referee's whistle sounding in the background, Chapman accused Owen and Baesler of negative campaigning, saying, "When a game gets rough, somebody has to call a foul." He then praises Henry - who happens to be the athlete's distant cousin for running a "strong, positive campaign."
Despite Chapman's spot, Baesler defeated both Owen and Henry and now faces Republican Cong. Jim Bunning, a former star pitcher and a baseball Hall of Famer, in the general election.
Whoever wins in November, let's hope he's a good sport about it.
